The Community Foundation of the New River Valley (CFNRV) hosted a gathering of eighty-five donors, friends and nonprofit leaders at the Draper Mercantile & Trading Company in Pulaski County on November 30th to celebrate over $45,000 in grant awards in its fall distribution cycle.

The CFNRV reviewed 66 applications for projects from across the New River Valley in a variety of fields of interest including the arts, social services, civic affairs, conservation, education, and health. Working closely with donors, the CFNRV’s Distribution Committee selected 46 projects, awarding a total of $45,690.75. A complete list of grant recipients is below.
In addition to announcing grant recipients, Executive Director Jessica Wirgau announced two new initiatives to begin in 2012. The CFNRV will be a partner in the Draper Village Project, an effort to enhance economic and community development along the Draper corridor catalyzed by the renovation of the Draper Mercantile. “We were so pleased to hold this celebration at the Draper Mercantile and highlight the significant investment that owners Bill and Debbie Gardner have made to create such a fantastic community center and launch our involvement in the Draper Village Project,” Wirgau said. The CFNRV will host a fund to receive private donations and grant monies supporting the creation of a community development nonprofit organization in Draper that will coordinate planning for potential capital improvements and job creation opportunities along the corridor. The CFNRV will also provide technical assistance with the process of establishing the new nonprofit.
Wirgau also announced the establishment of a new grant program, the Community Impact Grant Program, made possible in 2012 with the generous support of Carolyn Pearsall White. The program will award $10,000 over a period of three years and in-kind services to organizations seeking to launch a new project or expand an existing program that will have a lasting impact on issues critical to the New River Valley’s quality of life. Information sessions about applying to the new program will be held across the region in early 2012. The grant is funded with donations to the Andy & Susan Morikawa Capacity Building Fund.
