Adrienne Marie Rhudy, a 1994 graduate of Christiansburg High School, began her battle with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, while in college at the University of Kentucky. She successfully completed her bachelor's degree in 2000, but lost her battle with cancer in 2004. Her parents, Ann and Dan Rhudy, established a scholarship fund in her name as a tribute to her strength and her lasting memory.

The NRV Dental Benevolence Fund, established in 2008 by Joe and Margot Thompson, is dedicated to providing dental care and services to the poor and less fortunate in the New River Valley. In 2009, the fund awarded a $12,000 grant to the Free Clinic of the New River Valley to hire a part-time hygienist for the clinic's dental program.
